A recent Prima Build project render using microcement
We recently had the privilege of chatting to Livia Warren, an experienced Interior Design Consultant at Prima Build, to dive deep into the world of bathrooms.
Livia shared her insights on the latest design trends, essential renovation tips, and how to make the most of bathroom spaces. From innovative materials and fixtures to practical advice on maximising functionality, her expertise offers a fresh perspective for anyone looking to elevate their bathroom design.
Whether you’re planning a complete remodel or just seeking inspiration, Livia’s tips provide plenty of ideas to consider!
Renovations can be a big process, especially at the start before construction begins. These early stages are key to setting the project up for success. Here’s a quick look at how we do things at Prima Build:
I’m expecting 2025 to bring more nature-inspired hues, think organic greens (we may even see Avocado make a comeback!) and earthy browns. These tones pair so well with materials like terracotta, which I absolutely love and feel connected to through my European heritage.
Microcement has been making an impact this year, and I’m sure it’s here to stay. It’s a great way to add texture to bathrooms, giving them a sleek yet natural feel.
Brass isn’t going anywhere either, but I think we’ll see more people leaning toward living finishes that fit right in with the organic look everyone’s loving. Chocolate browns and dark copper finishes will be showing up more and more too.
Overall, there’s a big shift toward grounded, natural design and a stronger push for sustainable materials—something I’m excited to see grow even more in 2025!
As I mentioned, Microcement has been making a big impact. It’s such an easy way to add subtle texture to a bathroom. You can pair it with a feature tiled wall or even use it everywhere, including the ceiling, for an organic, Wabi-Sabi style timeless look.
If you’re into nature-inspired design, another way to bring texture into the bathroom is by using the same tile throughout but switching to a textured version for some of the walls. You could create a half-wall behind the vanity or add interest to specific areas, it’s a great way to keep things cohesive while adding depth.
We’ve worked on plenty of small bathrooms in our projects, and there are some great tricks to make them feel more spacious. A fully tiled, level-entry shower can do wonders for creating the illusion of more room. Pair that with wall-hung fixtures like a floating vanity and a wall-hung toilet with an in-wall cistern, and you’ve got a seamless, open feel.
Tiled recesses in shower walls are another clever way to add storage without taking up extra space. For clients who need even more storage, we like to include a recessed deep mirror cabinet, it’s a great way to maximise space while keeping everything tidy.
We love the level-entry look. It makes any space feel bigger, and not to mention flaunts clean lines, which is important in the design.
Where possible, we will always recommend level-entry systems to our clients.
In my opinion, both tiled and acrylic showers have their place in bathroom renovations, depending on the project. For us, about 95% of the bathrooms we do are tiled, with only around 5% being acrylic.
Tiled showers are definitely the more aesthetically pleasing option. They add a luxurious feel to any bathroom and can even make smaller spaces feel larger. Some people are hesitant about installing tiled showers in upstairs bathrooms, but that’s where the Atlantis Shower system comes in, it’s been our go-to for over a decade, giving both our clients and us peace of mind.
On the other hand, acrylic showers are a great choice when affordability is key. They’re quick to install, require less maintenance, and are super easy to clean, making them a practical option for some projects.
I truly believe that investing in high-quality fixtures is the way to go, especially in a room where water and moisture are constant factors. You want products that can withstand that kind of environment and last for years.
In many of the renovations we’ve done, we’ve replaced leaking showers, even ones that were only 4 years old. These issues often come down to a mix of installation errors and product failures. That’s why it’s so important to make sure your installer is experienced and knowledgeable and that the products being installed are from reputable brands and designed to handle the job.
Pay close attention to warranties, especially for finishes like matte black or matte, white-coated fixtures. Will they still look great in 2–3 years? The last thing you want is for your bathroom to look worn out or outdated when you’re ready to sell your home. Always read the fine print on warranties to know what’s covered and for how long.
If you’re looking to save, you can opt for more affordable fixtures but stick to trusted brands. You could also cut costs by painting walls instead of tiling every surface without compromising too much on style. It’s all about striking the right balance!
This really depends on a few key factors, how big is the room? Who will be using it? And is there already a bath in the house? If there isn’t, and we can fit one into the space, I’ll almost always recommend including one for resale value.
We’ve done a few shower-over-bath setups over the years, but my preference is to keep them separate whenever possible. During the initial consultation, I always discuss the must-haves with clients and explore areas where they might be open to compromise. This approach ensures the design ticks as many boxes as possible within the budget and space we have to work with.
Even if you don’t personally want a bathtub, it’s worth thinking long-term. A lot of people focus on what works for them right now and forget about the bigger picture, like how they might feel five years down the track if they’re looking to sell. At the end of the day, your home is still an investment.
Timeless design is my specialty, and I’m passionate about creating spaces that won’t end up outdated and destined for landfill in just 10 years.
I prefer to keep colours neutral, think whites, soft earth tones, and greys and add depth by incorporating different textures in those same tones. I always remind my clients that pops of colour can still be part of the design, whether through colourful accessories like towels or painted accent walls. When it comes to finishes, brushed nickel and stainless steel are safe, classic choices that hold up well over time.
For cabinetry, I lean towards simple, classic vanities that offer plenty of storage. I also like to add interest to the room with touches like LED strip lighting for a subtle, modern glow.
To me, timeless design is all about blending functionality, durability, and a clean, simple aesthetic that remains stylish for years to come.
The Icona Heated Towel Rail range is a standout for its sleek, modern profile that sets it apart from other options on the market. When it comes to timeless and classic design, the Icona range truly delivers. Unlike the chunky, clunky towel rails that can overwhelm a space, the slim, elegant design of the Icona adds a touch of sophistication without taking over the room. It’s the perfect blend of functionality and style that fits seamlessly into any bathroom.
Simple. Classic. Timeless.
The Verve Shower is a great option for anyone wanting the flexibility of an acrylic shower but still looking for that luxurious, high-end look. It’s a smart middle ground for people who aren’t set on a fully tiled shower but love the seamless look of tiled showers. With its frameless glass paired with the ultra-low profile tray , the Verve Shower adds a touch of elegance to any bathroom while keeping things practical and easy.
Using light colours and glossy tiles is a great trick to make a bathroom feel more open. Glossy tiles reflect light, whether it’s natural or from your lighting, which helps brighten the space and gives it an airier feel.
When it comes to tile size, bigger tends to be better for small spaces. Large-format tiles ( 600mmx600mm and 1200mmx600mm) mean fewer grout lines, so the room looks less busy and more seamless. Matching the grout color to the tiles also keeps everything cohesive and creates a clean, streamlined look.
If you want to add some personality, try subtle patterns or textures in similar shades so it doesn’t overwhelm the space.
Frameless glass showers with a level entry tiled tray, wall hung vanities, wall hung toilets all help to create the illusion of more space within a bathroom.
